Explore beyond what you imagine a basket to be. Taping into your creativity, in this course you will be exploring traditional basketry techniques with a sculptural perspective.

You’ll learn:

  • twining with the bundle start
  • how to weave verticals lengths
  • how to incorporate wood into weaving
  • how to weave multiple finishes.

You can use seagrass, jute, paper raffia, string - any material that has long lengths.

By the end of this course, not only will you have a stunning sculpture, but you will be confident in this basketry style.

I love sculptural basketry because it means you can be creative, not just follow the set pattern or the rules of traditional basketry. Once you’ve learnt the fundamentals, you can go wild. Isn’t that exciting!

I will take you step by step through how to weave this stunning sculpture.

If you are like me (which I’m sure you are), you have a collection of interesting sticks you’ve found on your walks or in the garden. In this exciting course, you will be incorporating this found wood using the basketry technique of twining.

This workshop is so much more than just learning techniques, it’s an opportunity to connect to tap into powerful creativity that is ready to surface (even if you think you have no creativity).

For this course you’ve learnt the fundamentals of twining so now you can unleash your creativity and apply it to create stunning baskets and sculptures.

This course is for you if:

  • You want to explore beyond what you imagine a basket to be.
  • You want to learn how to weave a sculpture using basketry techniques.

  • You only know one or two ways to weave, but want to learn more.
  • You’re looking for a fun, relaxing creative outlet, and an enjoyable way to spend your downtime.

Learning at your own pace, this practical video based course is suitable for beginners and intermediate weavers. You will have completed basketry sculptures and confidence to do more!

Catriona Pollard - basketry artist and teacher

As a practicing basketry artist and teacher, my unique sculptural work offers glimpses of shapeshifting natural forms, from unnoticed branches, leaves and seedpods into stunning works that celebrate the abundance of nature.

I use foraged and discarded plant material with traditional basketry and assemblage techniques to reimagine nature.

My art is about truly seeing the extraordinary in everyday moments. Simply, it’s about being still, and letting the beauty surface.

I’ve had several solo exhibitions and exhibited extensively in selected and group exhibitions. I've been finalist in many art awards including International Textile Art Award, Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize, Northern Beaches Art Prize, North Sydney Art Prize, Emerging Artist of the Year Craft NSW and Mosman Art Gallery.

I teach sold out workshops in my studio in Sydney, week long residentials at art schools and also internationally.

My artwork is profiled across major art and design media and is featured nationally in galleries, high end design spaces and private collections. Read more about me and my work at www.theartofweaving.com.au
